The Green Monster: Spirulina Popcorn

spirulina-popcorn-photo1.jpg

I’ve been looking for ways to utilize my Spirulina Manna. Let me know your favorite brand of Spirulina in the comment section if you will. I’m always in the market to try a new brand. I came upon this awesome video which shows you how to make Spirulina popcorn and since it’s filmed in Kauai, my favorite place on Earth, I couldn’t help but post it.

They don’t give the exact proportions on how to make the popcorn, but I did 2 tbsp olive oil, 1/4 cup popcorn kernels, 1/2 tsp sea salt, 1/2 tsp Spirulina, and 1 tsp nutritional yeast. And the husband and I both agree that it was some tasty popcorn. Don’t be scared off by the Spirulina or the nutritional yeast because both add just a subtle hint of flavor with a serious punch of nutrient density. I wrote about the health benefits of Spirulina yesterday and nutritional yeast is no slouch either.

Nutritional yeast is a deactivated yeast that’s categorized as a fungus. It’s a complete protein, meaning it’s a source of protein that contains all nine amino acids in the correct proportions for supporting human health. It’s often fortified with B12 as well. The flavor is sort of nutty and sort of cheesy all at the same time, making it the perfect popcorn topping.
