You Are What You Eat: Sattvic Foods

You’ve heard it time and time again. Your mom said it to you and before that, her mom said it to her. But even though I had heard it so many times, it wasn’t until I started practicing yoga that it really began to resonate with me. You really ARE what you eat.

I used to watch what I ate in order to be thin and fit into a certain size pair of jeans, but not anymore. What’s the point in being thin if you’re totally unhappy and full of discontent? The foods you choose contribute to your yogic journey in a big way and it’s when you realize this that you begin to make real progress.

Sattva means purity and sattvic foods promote purity. I just got a refresh lesson in sattvic foods from the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center manual, Yoga Mind Body. Sattvic foods serve to both calm the mind and sharpen the intellect. Sattvic foods have no preservatives, artificial flavorings, or additives. They’re soothing and nourishing and promote and maintain mental poise.

Sattvic Food Choices

Fresh fruits and vegetables
Dried fruits
Cooked vegetables
Salad
Grains
Legumes
Nuts
Seeds
Whole-grain breads
Honey
Fresh herbs
Herbal teas
Milk
Butter

Sattvic Eating

1. Get on a routine schedule.
2. Chew your food well so that it digests easier.
3. Keep meals simple (4 to 5 different foods per meal).
4. Eat until 1/2 full of food and 1/4 full of liquid.
5. Eat in peace.
6. Make diet changes gradually.
7. Eat at least one raw salad per day.
